Disability And Friendship From A Female Perspective

Growing up, I have been fortunate enough to experience and understand life as both a disabled person, and an "average" girl. I was always in regular education classes, because I've only ever had a physical condition, so I have always been surrounded by people my age who have no disability whatsoever, but I have also had the pleasure of meeting people I could also relate to, who do have their limitations. Having the "best of both worlds" in this case, has allowed me to make some great friends, both inside and outside of the disabled community. Having these experiences, as a female, has also provided me with a great group of female friends. The girls I am friends with today are more than friends - they are my sisters. Two of my sisters are also disabled, but they are so much more than just their limitations, as are all of the rest of us who are disabled, and I am blessed with their friendship, as well as the other girls who are friends with us today, because they got to know who we were not just on the outside, but also on the inside. I will admit that it does take special people to be friends with someone who is different than they are, these special people do exist, and our differences should not only be accepted, but celebrated as well! I also think that as a women it is important for all of us to support and learn from one another. In my opinion, female friendships are one of the most important things to have. Together, we are a force to be reckoned with, and forming strong bonds with each other is personally not only necessary, but also one of the most rewarding and fulfilling parts of our lives. Besides my blood relatives, I would not be the person I am today, if I did not have my "soul sisters" in my life!
