My name's Thomas Lee Joy Jr. I'm from Cushing Iowa. I was in a car accident that left me paralyzed from c7 down at the age of 25 on January 24,2016.
Recovering was hard for me . It was definitely hard. When I was in the rehabilitation hospital, they weren’t able to teach. I've had to teach my self all. I know in regards to transfers and stretching and all of it that comes with being in the wheelchair.
I’m lucky to be a paraplegic and not a quad. Also very fortunate I didn't hurt anyone in my wreck. The hardest transition for me has been to not work.
I miss running heavy equipment and driving semi and farming more than anything. I had a major shoulder injury that set me back from the start of my accident. But I'm pushing through and learning things on my own. In my spare time I like to work out as much as possible to keep up my strength. I also like to spend time with my family.
Future goals for myself are to continue working on becoming stronger and bettering myself while trying to inspire others. If they are in a chair or able bodied I wanna help them in some sort of way. I'd really like to help younger spinal cord injury survivors find their new groove in life and show them some tools they need to tackle the world now!
My advice to people in my situation is simply to just not give up. Some where there is someone looking at you wishing they were in as good of shape as you. Take the good days as they come and try your best to limit the bad days. You make your own happiness.
